CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Mecklenburg County Sheriff Chipp Bailey says he will not seek reelection in 2014.
Bailey made the announcement Friday to WBTV's Steve Crump.
He was appointed by the county's Democratic Party to finish the term of Jim Pendergraph in 2008. Pendergraph left to take a job with the federal government.
Bailey won the Sheriff's Office in his own right in 2010.
He told Crump that he wanted to go out and try other things, perhaps volunteer work.
Bailey has been in law enforcement for 41 years, starting with the Mecklenburg County Police in 1972.
His educational background consists of a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Pfeiffer University and a Masters of Criminal Justice from the University of South Carolina.
A native Charlottean, Chipp and his wife, Sharon, have two sons.
