CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- City Council members in Charlotte have to decide whether to hand over $700,000 in funding to continue the housing revitalization of Brightwalk.
The Charlotte Mecklenburg Housing Partnership (CMHP) is asking for the money from Community Development Block Grant funding.
"It's not local tax dollars" says Council Member James Mitchell. "The funding for community development block grant was strictly federal dollars and $4M was unallocated so this is $700,000 of $4M."
Council Member Mitchell, whose district covers Brightwalk, says the money is needed to keep up with housing sales in the revitalized community.
Brightwalk used to be Double Oaks- a community once plagued by drugs and crimes.
In 2007, City officials decided to redevelop Double Oaks into an affordable housing community with multi family units, market rate single family houses, and townhouses for mixed income residents.
